Although many people purchase these for indoor display, each house is built to correct specifications for attracting small song birds when hung 8 to 12 feet off the ground. The exterior is sealed with Spar Varnish (which is used in marine applications) to protect the house from weather elements including moisture and UV light. Houses hung under an eave or porch will maintain their finish for more years than those fully exposed outside under a tree. Seasonal clean out is required to prepare for each year's new family. Simply remove 2 screws and base of house to access the nesting chamber and remove old nesting material, then replace screws in existing holes. Exterior surface can be washed with mild soap and water and towel dried to maintain appearance. If after time one desires to apply more spar varnish, it can be applied in thin, light coats using a spray can available at most hardware stores.
