Mahogany "Legacy" Boxes
Mahogany "Legacy" Boxes
I was commissioned to make two boxes for a local Bible study group. The word "Legacy" was to be engraved along with a tree carving which is the symbol of the group. I chose Mahogany for the boxes. Each box is a six inch cube made with "wrap around grain", mitered on the corners. I lined the inside of the boxes with Eastern Cedar, unfinished, to enjoy the smell of Cedar every time the box is opened. The lid is seven inches square with an ogee detailed edge. I finished the boxes with one coat of Watco penetrating oil, four coats of Tung oil, and one coat of bee's wax buffed to a satin luster. The Mahogany will develop a warm, rich patina that should be worthy of the recepients legacy.
