Modernist Style Sideboard
The Modernist Style Sideboard is designed to store large dining room table leaves and pads which need to lay flat. The design is inspired by a 1960's era piece built by English furniture maker and designer Ernest Joyce. The dovetailed carcass rests on a 12" "stool" making the overall height 32". The piece is made primarily of Walnut with quartersawn White Oak drawers and Birch plywood bottoms. The drawer fronts are made of walnut with Mimosa veneer made in my shop. The entire stool is made of walnut.
The two lower drawers hold one table leaf each and the top drawer holds the pads with a little extra space. The large top serves as a buffet. Each drawer has full extention, 75 pound capacity drawer slides to make it easier to lift and replace the table leaves. White Oak used for the drawer boxes is strong and durable. The Mimosa veneer I made came from a log given to me by my brother Jim. It was large for a Mimosa tree- too large for his front yard in Durham! I cut, stickered and air dried the flitch for about 3 years. The veneer is made from the crotch grain, glued in book match sequence, and installed in decending order.
The Walnut came from a tree from my friend Chris Penny's yard in Alamance County in the late 90's. I had it milled and It has been air drying ever since-- fifteen years! The entire piece was made from one log so there is no variation in color or texture. The top is made from 3 boards in bookmatch sequence to looks like one large board. The carcass has a total of 52 dovetails.
The interior of the piece is finished with Watco Danish oil. The exterior is finished with four hand rubbed coats of Tung Oil. The contemporary pulls are 5-1/2" brushed Nickle.
A companion picture frame made of Walnut from the same tree is designed and will be completed soon to display a large print above the sideboard and complete the set.
