Walnut Nightstand
I was commissioned to build a Walnut nightstand and developed the design from a pencil drawing my customer made.
The nightstand is 36" wide, 16" deep, and 27" tall. It consists of a pull out shelf on top with two 4" drawers beneath and an open bookshelf below. The body of the piece is made of two book matched boards glued in sequence creating a flowing, wrap around grain pattern. All of the Walnut came from the same log except for the feet.
The drawer fronts are made from Walnut crotch grain veneer which I made in my shop, cut from the same tree just a little further up the log. The veneer is glued to the same Walnut stock the body of the piece is cut from. The drawer boxes are made from quarter sawn White Oak for maximum stability and strengh.
I turned the feet and drawer pulls in the shop. The pull for the extendable shelf is made from spalted Holly because the figure resembles the sap wood at the center of the crotch grain book match on the drawers below.
The piece is finished with 4 sprayed coats of satin polyurethane.
